Ace – How Long

This song is just over 40 years old, and yet, it still shines as an example of a great song, a great mix, and a great production.
When I first became aware of this song, I was about 5 years old. I imagined it was about all sorts of sordid things that go on between grown ups that I was going to have to wait another 15 or 20 years find out the gory details on. 40 years later, I did a bit of checking around on this song, and it turns out that this song was about a band leader finding out that his bass player was jamming with other bands behind his back. It all blew over just in time for said bass player to play on this track. Not as sordid as I had hoped.
After hearing this song a few times, the voice might became familiar. Think Mike + The Mechanics “Silent Running,” “The Living Years,” Squeeze’s “Tempted.” Yes, Paul Carrack gets around, and his pedigree is impossibly legit. We should all take a minute to say a big thanks to Mr. Carrack.
