The Girls! – Annie
May 21, 2015 10:00 amI found this album in a roundabout sort of way. I don’t want to give the whole back story away, in that it directly ties to another song and artist that I will be featuring in the near future. Suffice it to say that I picked up a sampler from Relay Recording in Columbus, Ohio that happened to be pressed on vinyl. I saw the name John Fintel somewhere on the package, and that name rang a bazillion bells.
I then spoke to Mark Abrams, over at CIMU, and it turns out that John helped engineer Mark’s first band’s (Something Said) second album. I did a bunch of photo work during the recording of that album, and had met John there.
I dropped John an email asking what he’s up to lately, and he talked about one of his recent projects, The Girls! Following my usual jaunt down the rabbit hole, I found a trove of hits by The Girls! After about three listens, I threw some money at the internets, and got my vinyl copy a few days later. They’re on BandCamp, so when you order the vinyl, you also get a digital copy.
Just the other day, I was discussing on some other list that Columbus is always overlooked when it comes to great talent and killer bands. The Girls! are another example of this.
If you want a quick and dirty example of this, just starting poking around in CIMU’s youtube channel.
If I were lucky enough to get paid to either pick radio hits or pick songs for movie soundtracks, this album would be all over both.
