The Smithereens – You’ve got to Hide Your Love Away

I first learned of this song watching The Beatles “HELP!” on the 3:30 movie after school. My mom made popcorn, and we all sat in the living room to watch. This wasn’t a normal day around our house. To this day, it’s hard to believe that we must have watched the TV from 3:30 to 5:30, but we did.

The movie was magical. This was the first time I had seen anything like this. There was no MTV, no music videos at the time, nothing of this kind. This was the first music video I had ever seen.

Years later, I would discover The Smithereens on KROQ, and they would end up, just as The Beatles did, staples of my listening. I thought this was a fitting tribute to both bands.
